Understanding the problem

Your jaw joint works as part of a system.

The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull. Muscles, teeth, bite, posture, sleep, stress, and habits such as clenching can all influence how this system feels and functions.

Symptoms can have several causes, so assessment matters. We listen to your history, examine the teeth and jaw, and explain whether dental care, self-management, or referral to another professional is appropriate.

Reasons to seek advice

Symptoms worth discussing.

Jaw pain or stiffness

Discomfort around the joint, difficulty opening, or aching after waking or chewing.

Clicking or locking

Noises alone are not always a problem, but pain or restricted movement should be assessed.

Clenching and grinding

Repeated pressure can contribute to muscle fatigue, worn teeth, sensitivity, and broken restorations.

Personalised care

Treatment depends on the cause.

Advice may include habit awareness, gentle jaw care, protection for teeth, bite-related treatment, or collaboration with your GP, physiotherapist, or another specialist. We avoid promising a single fix for every patient.
